distal pancreatectomy versus conventional laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy: a comparative study for short-term

Eric C. H. Lai,Chung Ngai Tang

Frontiers of Medicine 2015, Volume 9, Issue 3,   Pages 356-360 doi: 10.1007/s11684-015-0404-0

Abstract:

Robotic system has been increasingly used in pancreatectomy. However, the effectiveness of this method remains uncertain. This study compared the surgical outcomes between robot-assisted laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy and conventional laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy. During a 15-year period, 35 patients underwent minimally invasive approach of distal pancreatectomy in our center. Seventeen of these patients had robot-assisted laparoscopic approach, and the remaining 18 had conventional laparoscopic approach. Their operative parameters and perioperative outcomes were analyzed retrospectively in a prospective database. The mean operating time in the robotic group (221.4 min) was significantly longer than that in the laparoscopic group (173.6 min) (P = 0.026). Both robotic and conventional laparoscopic groups presented no significant difference in spleen-preservation rate (52.9% vs. 38.9%) (P = 0.505), operative blood loss (100.3 ml vs. 268.3 ml) (P = 0.29), overall morbidity rate (47.1% vs. 38.9%) (P = 0.73), and post-operative hospital stay (11.4 days vs. 14.2 days) (P = 0.46). Both groups also showed no perioperative mortality. Similar outcomes were observed in robotic distal pancreatectomy and conventional laparoscopic approach. However, robotic approach tended to have the advantages of less blood loss and shorter hospital stay. Further studies are necessary to determine the clinical position of robotic distal pancreatectomy.

The second short-term warm ischemia after vascular anastomosis did not affect early renal function recovery

Tao Qiu, Jiangqiao Zhou, Xiuheng Liu, Minghuan Ge, Zhiyuan Chen

Frontiers of Medicine 2012, Volume 6, Issue 3,   Pages 329-331 doi: 10.1007/s11684-012-0211-9

Abstract:

Ischemic postconditioning was defined as rapid intermittent interruptions of blood ?ow in the early phase of reperfusion, which has been found to be protective against renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in animal models but not in clinical trials. We describe a case that the allograft renal vein was twisted because of the surgeon’s mistake, which caused the warm ischemia of allograft after reperfusion. The allograft restored blood flow without second reperfusion and cold preservation after 9 min of warm ischemia. The patient was followed up for 3 months and the allograft worked well without complications.

Short-term effect of temperature variation on the competition between PAOs and GAOs during acclimation

Nanqi REN, Han KANG, Xiuheng WANG, Nan LI

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 2,   Pages 277-282 doi: 10.1007/s11783-010-0226-x

Abstract: Sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) processes was used to investigate the impact of the temperature shock on the competition between phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) and glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs) in start-up stage. During the 34 days operation, SBR was set with temperature variation(0–5 d, 22±1°C; 6–13 d, 29±1°C; 14–34 d, 14±1°C). PAOs and GAOs were analyzed by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), and intracellular polyphosphate granules were stained by Neisser-stain. The results showed that the influence of temperature shock on PAOs’ abundance was more serious than that on GAOs in the enriching process. Under sudden and substantially temperature variation, from 22±1°C to 29±1°C and then to 14±1°C, the domination of PAOs was deteriorated. After temperature shock, PAOs’ competitive advantages at low temperature that concluded in other study did not appear in our study. As mesophilic, GAOs (indicated by and ) were more temperature adaptive and better grew and took the domination at 14±1°C in the end. In the competition process, organisms of tetrad forming organisms (TFOs)-like shape which were considered as typical GAOs, were observed. With the evidence of poly-P granules containing by Neisser-straining and result of FISH, these organisms of TFOs-like shape were better to be assumed as adaption state or a special self-protecting shape of PAOs.

Short-term prediction of influent flow rate and ammonia concentration in municipal wastewater treatment

Shuai MA, Siyu ZENG, Xin DONG, Jining CHEN, Gustaf OLSSON

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2014, Volume 8, Issue 1,   Pages 128-136 doi: 10.1007/s11783-013-0598-9

Abstract: The prediction of the influent load is of great importance for the improvement of the control system to a large wastewater treatment plant. A systematic data analysis method is presented in this paper in order to estimate and predict the periodicity of the influent flow rate and ammonia (NH ) concentrations: 1) data filtering using wavelet decomposition and reconstruction; 2) typical cycle identification using power spectrum density analysis; 3) fitting and prediction model establishment based on an autoregressive model. To give meaningful information for feedforward control systems, predictions in different time scales are tested to compare the corresponding predicting accuracy. Considering the influence of the rainfalls, a linear fitting model is derived to estimate the relationship between flow rate trend and rain events. Measurements used to support coefficient fitting and model testing are acquired from two municipal wastewater treatment plants in China. The results show that 1) for both of the two plants, the periodicity affects the flow rate and NH concentrations in different cycles (especially cycles longer than 1 day); 2) when the flow rate and NH concentrations present an obvious periodicity, the decreasing of prediction accuracy is not distinct with increasing of the prediction time scales; 3) the periodicity influence is larger than rainfalls; 4) the rainfalls will make the periodicity of flow rate less obvious in intensive rainy periods.
